English 9

Course Description

 

English 9 will survey the literary genres of novel, poetry, short story, and drama, as well as provide practice with the writing process. Although more will be covered in this course throughout the year, essential skills (listed below) must be mastered by every student in order to be minimally proficient in the course.

 

Essential Standards

Students can write arguments to support claims of meaningful topics or texts, using valid reasoning, relevant, and sufficient evidence.

Students can cite strong and thorough textual evidence that supports inferences and analysis of the text.

Students can contribute to a conversation by asking questions, incorporating others into a discussion, and clarifying or challenging the ideas of others.

Students can conduct short or sustained research projects that answer a specific question or solve a problem.

Students can analyze accounts of the same subject told in a different medium, determining which aspects are emphasized in which medium.

Students can clearly and concisely present important findings and supporting evidence to listeners so that they can follow the line of reasoning.
