Cell Phone/Electronic Signaling Device Storage Procedure

Dear Centaur Families & Students:

We are a community of learners and doers. We maintain order and structure on our campus through our collective daily cooperation. Each Centuar contributes by arriving to school on time, being on time for each class, doing your part to keep the campus clean, and safe, and overall being a kind, respectful, and caring peer and student. This school year we have a new procedure for cell phones in the classroom. The new classroom procedure requires all students to place their cell phones in an area designated upon entering the class. Our CCHS Electronics/Cell phone policy remains unchanged and has been the same for several years (view policy). This new procedure is an additional step students must take for compliance with cell phone storage.  All CCHS teachers will follow the same procedure for cell phone storage during class time.  Here is a quote from a CCHS teacher during a brainstorming session in May 2024 about the reason for implementing the new cell phone storage procedure.

“In class, every time I remind one student to put their phone away, not only am I sometimes met with resistance but the other students have taken the opportunity to check their phones while I was otherwise occupied. Some kids attempt to use phones secretly in their laps or under desks, some use their phones in plain sight, while others stare vacantly, unaware of what is occurring in class because they’re listening blatantly to whatever content is playing through their earbuds. I consider myself an energetic, enthusiastic, engaging, and passionate teacher, but even I cannot compete with cell phones for attention during class.”

Cell phones are a huge problem in school. Phones are distracting, and addicting, and contribute to severe adverse side effects such as depression and sleep deprivation. Not only do cell phones make it difficult for students to pay attention in class, but there are a myriad of statistics and research as to why students should “unplug and disconnect.” We want to do this for the greater good of our school community. In the way we all, work together to create a safe, clean, and respectful school this cell phone storage process will require the same unity.

Review the Electronic Signaling Device Policy on pg. 51 of Parent-Student Handbook.

CCHS teachers and staff have worked to establish a middle-ground approach to protecting instructional time during class. This protocol is a procedure and is an enhancement to our current policy. The current policy stated in the Parent-Student Handbook "Electronic Signaling Device Policy" on page 52 remains the same. All students are to follow this policy and the directives of their teachers.
