Music Appreciation (Period 5)

While MUSIC is such an integral part of our everyday lives, it is often taken for granted.  Most often we hear “background music” in films, television, elevators, stores, and in our homes and cars, which creates a pleasant environment, but rarely involves “informed hearing.”

The purpose of this course is not just to gain an appreciation of music, but to understand its form and structure, its history and development, and its role as an art form.  The following goals will be pursued throughout the semester:

1. Development of an understanding and appreciation of the art of music.
2. Development of an appreciable understanding of musical theory and vocabulary, including use of technology.
3. To gain an appreciation of the composition and performance process in music.
4. An ability to trace the history and development of music as it relates to toady’s culture.
5. Development of an appreciation of the vast range of musical styles and cultural influences.
6. To learn basic fundamentals of performance and composition.
