Good morning! I hope the first day of virtual learning was a success for everyone. Just a reminder, CCHS is passing out Chromebooks and chargers today for students in need of technology. You can grab a Chromebook between 10:30-12:00.
I have received many of your research topics-thank you! If you have not submitted your topic, you must do so today! ASAP! Please, do not try to write this research paper without receiving feedback. This paper is a lot of work, and I want to make sure that everyone is on the right track. You should not progress forward with your paper until you submit your topic.
Later this afternoon, you will want to check Canvas for feedback regarding your research topic. If you emailed me your topic, please submit it to Turnitin via Canvas.
For today:
- If you have not saved the research log, please do this today. Share the research log with your partner, so you both have access to the same document.
- Today, you start your research. This means you must begin finding reliable news articles to help you write your paper. You and your partner must find a total of seven reliable articles and record your findings on the research log. When considering reliable sources, use your CRAAP sheet as a guide.
I know some of you were absent last week and did not receive this handout. You may check back throughout the day as I am working on posting an electronic copy of this document. Until then, you may want to ask a friend from class to send you a picture of the CRAAP sheet.
- Refer to the research prompt (task sheet) as a guide when trying to find research (quotes and reliable information) for your paper. Remember, you will need to research a history of your issue, so you can explain the problem in your essay; you will need to explain how the issue impacts your country (please refer to your points a-c on the topic card you submitted to Turnitin); and you will need to research possible solutions for each impact (points a-c).
- This research log is due Friday by 11:59 M. This will be your primary assignment for the rest of the week. Please believe me when I say it is a lot of work. Do not wait until Thursday to get started on your research. Please do not email me with questions at ten P.M. on Friday night- I will be in bed! Please feel free to email me with questions and concerns prior to the due date.
You will submit your completed research log to Turnitin via Canvas by Friday. We will NOT start writing the paper until after spring break.
Good luck, and happy researching! Remember to keep checking Edlio/CCHS homework website each day for handouts and announcements!

Dear Tenth Graders,
Thank you! Thank you for being patient. Thank you for contacting your partners. Thank you for submitting your work. Thank you for emailing me your questions. I know this week has been trying for some, but keep moving forward and keep trying your best.
Looking ahead, I want to make sure that everyone understands that you do not need to start writing the research essay until after spring break. After the break, I will take you step by step through the process.
In addition, if we are still working virtually after the break, the plan is for our class to work entirely from Canvas. This means we will have access to more in-depth instruction, videos, easier access to assignments, tests and quizzes, and discussion with our peers. I know we miss each other. I miss you!
Until then, keep working on your research log- it’s due Friday. Also, keep checking Edlio/CCHS homework website for handouts and announcements. If we make the move to Canvas, I will let you know!
With much love,
Mrs. McGuire

I hope you all had a restful weekend. Starting tomorrow, I will post daily lessons on the CCHS homework website (Edlio). Each lesson will be posted by eight A.M. Each post will include a due date and instructions concerning how to submit work for a grade (most assignments will be submitted via turnitin.com through Canvas). If you have questions regarding specific assignments or submitting work, you may reach me by email during my office hours.

1.Do you believe Elie Wiesel would agree or disagree with the following statement
The world should operate on the principle of every man for himself.
Explain your reasoning, and support your ideas by discussing at least two CDs from the text.
Journal #5 My Faith, Feb.13
(Most of us completed this journal before starting Night.)
In about a page, describe what your personal faith is. Your faith does not necessarily have to be religious, although it can be. Your faith can be your values or an idea that you try to live by.
Journal #6 Faith Part II, Feb.13
Looking back, Wiesel reflects that he does not understand why he lived and others died. He believes that it was merely chance and by the grace of God that he survived.
What do you think? In your journal, explain what you think is the most important action or quality that Wiesel demonstrated throughout his experience. How did it help him survive the evils of the Holocaust? Use many CDs from the text to support your point. Is there a lesson or a message that we can take away from this experience?

1.Using as much detail as possible, describe the hangings that Eliezer witnesses at Buna. Pay close attention to the hanging of the youth from Warsaw versus the young boy (the pipel).
2. Analyze the following passage.
- Explain the passage in your own words, providing context.
- Pick-it-apart and write down what readers can infer or what the author implies.
- Connect to an importance. How does this scene shape the narrator?
For more than half an hour he stayed there, struggling between life and death, dying in slow agony...
Behind me, I heard the same man asking:
"For God’s sake, where is God now?"
And I heard a voice within me answer him: "Where is He? Here He is- He is hanging here on this gallows”
That night the soup tasted of corpses (65/62).

Journal #1 Quote Response, Jan. 22
Choose one of the following DQs and respond in some way. Write the entire 5 minutes.
1."I stood petrified. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched and kept silent. Only yesterday, I would have dug my nails into this criminal’s flesh. Had I changed so much? So fast?" (39/37).
2."This one had an iron gate with the overhead inscription: Arbeit Macht Frei. Work makes you free. Auschwitz" (40/38).
