FINAL QUICKWRITE

Though this is not the last day of the year, it is the final ICL 12 quickwrite of the year. Reflection. I ask for ONE FULL PAGE.

Please share with me the experience you have had in my class. What has worked? What has not? What can I keep next year that you have enjoyed and that you think others would? What types of activities and readings could you have used more of? What areas in essay writing would you have liked to be discussed more fully? Tell me as much as you can about your experience, please: it will not hurt your grade. Your honesty will be appreciated. Thank you so much for being my student: it has been a privilege. -FP

You may discuss anything! It need not be ICL 12 related!

Quickwrite 63 – 17 March 2020

Think about ICL. Think about the readings, the quizzes, the HLQs, the Socratic Seminars, and the major quarterly essays. Consider how these things are connected. Consider how they “feed” into one another. What are some ways you can strengthen the connections between the different tasks that you undertake? What are areas of difficulty? For example, do you struggle in Socratic Seminars? If so, why? Do you excel in HLQs, but flounder in essays? If so, why? What I am asking for is a one-page reflection on the things we do here, where you succeed, where you need assistance, and a general evaluation of the course’s “fit” for you.

Imagine yourself on the first day of school this year, in my class and others, as well as afterschool. A part of being an adult is engaging with the ability to reflect. Reflection includes celebrating accomplishments, but also thinking about how we might have done things differently. What things might you have done differently in the last four months? I can think of many for myself right off the bat.

Discuss the stories, challenges, and issues shared by the young persons in Boys to Men. It seems that many of them are frustrated by cultural barriers, gender role expectations, and lack of mentorship. Reflect on these challenges, to consider what exactly are the sources of these challenges? Also, consider what these young persons could benefit from, socially and culturally, in order to explore their gender identity. Consider anything else that stood out to you, including homophobia, violence, and a consistent dissatisfaction with teachers.

As our society changes through assimilation and acculturation, we see the effects these changes are having on our individual cultures, ethnicities and on the individual family. How has this changing landscape affected your own family? Do you see a change in values, behaviors, beliefs, and structures within your own family or in those of friends and extended family? How do you feel about this transition? Thinking ahead to your future: what will you hold onto from the past? What changes will you embrace for your own nuclear family?

Quickwrite 50 – 3 February 2020

Consider the phenomenon of “college-going” culture. Certainly, in the West, much support surrounds around advocating, promoting, and nurturing this path. Now, consider the notion of the love of learning. In what ways do college culture and the love of learning relate? Do they feed upon one another, strengthening one another? Or do they inhibit one another? Is there a possibility of having a balance? If you are not on the college track, please write about the work environment and how capitalism relates to the love of the profession, or similar connection between work and passion. (Try to avoid the no-no words: is, was, were, are, be, being, this, those, these.)

Quickwrite 48 – 28 January 2020

Reflect on the argument surrounding ‘difference’ and ‘universality’ in interculturalism. One camp states that we should focus on universality (sameness) in order to minimalize difference in the struggle for connections. The other states that we should focus on difference as the top priority in intercultural engagements. Should we emphasize the universal? Or should we celebrate difference? Is there a balance? How does one go about ‘not seeing’ difference anyway? Is this even possible? What is the path to intercultural celebration vis-à-vis communication and identification?

This quickwrite should focus upon a scene where gender/biological sex/orientation was an issue for you this year. It could be a school scenario, home issue, or work issue. How did gender/biological sex/orientation play a part of your situation, confrontation, or interaction? Was it troubling? Celebratory? Did it reveal something? I am mostly interested in your ability to look back on a situation with insights from your readings.

Quickwrite 38 – 6 January 2020

Ask yourself: what behaviors do I engage in which are deemed ‘masculine’ by U.S. society, and which behaviors might be deemed ‘feminine’, regardless of my sex/uality?

List 10 of these daily practices and identify each accordingly as masculine or feminine. If you need to deviate from this, feel free to do so.

Once you have done that, answer the following in one paragraph.

In what ways will my performances of the masculine and feminine determine:

My dating/marriage choices and how I am perceived by the world?

How I will be perceived in the workplace or in university?
How I will make friends and/or find social circles?
