One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Reading Schedule

This is a rough schedule of the pace for reading OFOTCN.  I understand the pace is quick but this is roughly the pace the other English 11 classes have been following. To be successful in this unit, you will need to stay on top of the reading. As you read, you should be taking notes or using post-its to mark specific passages in the text that help you understand the major themes we will be discussing. There will be a Socratic Seminar and an essay at the end of the unit. The more quality notes you take, the better you will do on both these tasks.

All dates are when the section should be READ BY:

Friday, May 6:                    pgs. 1-42

Monday, May 9:               pgs. 42-69

Wednesday, May 11:     pgs. 70-91

Read Chapters 5-9 of The Great Gatsby

There will be an extended DIRT quiz on Monday, April 11th.

While reading, you should pay attention to/take notes on the following things:
  • Important plot points in each chapter (major and minor)
  • Character development (both major and minor characters)
  • Important quotes from the text
  • Any instances of symbolism (refer to worksheet) and repeated mentions of certain colors in chapters
  • How the chapter deals with the essential questions we are looking at:
    • How does it reflect the time period/culture?
    • How does it reflect the American Dream and/or dark side of the American Dream?
    • How do the characters' beliefs affect their behaviors/actions?
You will be working in randomly assigned groups after the break to present a mini lesson on the above aspects for one chapter.
