Use Purdue Owl as a resource on how to cite!

The essay itself must answer the prompt - See the prompt below.

This is an argument, therefore, one of your paragraphs must contain an acknowledgement of the other side and your counterargument for that position.

Number of paragraphs??  As many as are needed to make a convincing argument.

How much evidence to support your argument?? At least two pieces of evidence per paragraph, but do not limit yourself to two per paragraph  if you need more to make a convincing argument.

Reasoning: Your reasoning must connect and explain your evidence as well as connect and support the position you have taken in your topic sentence.

Assignment

Brainstorm Requirements: Brainstorm will be handed in Monday 9/21/15 in class

I will expect to see in your brainstorm:

The following list on your paper:

      Evidence ___    Specific _____

      Id Appeals ___

 Connections:

      How  Gore uses appeal____

How the appeal/specific evidence of appeals affects me___

Why does this appeal/specific evidence work or not work (it convinces or does not convince me)

You will check off items as you look at your brainstorm. The idea is that if you look at your brainstorm to make sure you have evidence and that it is specific, if you do not you add it.

The same for the appeals. If you did not identify which appeal the evidence is using you need to add it.

The same for the connections - each specific piece of evidence must have some kind of notes that covers the items under connections.

You may have two marks on the underline - you might for instance write "some" next to specific evidence referring to when you first looked at your brainstorm, then when you add to your brainstorm you would go back and check off that item if all of your evidence is now specific.

Your brainstorm should also have your specific evidence circled- if you did a web put a colored circle around your specific evidence.

You should have lines or some other designation (1*, 1* , 2*, 2* 2*) that shows specific evidence that is connected to each other. For instance you might have some logos evidence that could be used in the same paragraph of your essay because they seem to support the point you will be making.

You should have "Xs" through material you will not be using in your essay. You need to look at the brainstorming you have done and decide what you will use and what you will not use in your paper. If you do not have anything "Xd" out, then you did not do a complete brainstorm.

If you have all of these items and have shown your deep thinking then you will earn 30 pts.

Remember use this brainstorm as a working document to create your essay!

Due:

Assignment

Friday Due:  Write a full 500 word essay discussing the rhetorical appeals Vice President Al Gore used in his movie "An Inconvenient Truth". Make sure you are specific about the types of appeals he uses ie: audio ethos, visual pathos etc. Give specific examples of these types of appeals (this is your evidence that supports your conclusion about the types of appeal being used). Your commentary (reasoning) needs to discuss the affect his appeals has on you. Make good connections between the appeal used and the affect it has, make sure you explain WHY it has that affect.

Remember:

Hook your audience (me) with an interesting introduction. Do not make a list in your thesis. State a position in your thesis.

Your topic sentence needs to state a position.

Connecting your topic, evidence and reasoning makes for good writing.

Make sure each body paragraph has specific evidence of the appeal you are discussing. Discuss how Gore used his appeal to try to convince you that global warming exists. Discuss how the appeal and specific evidence affects you as an audience, discuss why this appeal and specific evidence works or does not convince you that global warming exists. How you order your evidence, how many examples you use is up to you.

Weave your evidence into your reasoning.

Your conclusion is NOT a summary - leave your reader with something to think about or a final thought. This is where you get to tell your audience something important!

Use your brainstorming document to help you write!

Above all -- Think before you write!!!

Due:

Assignment

Brainstorm: Circle on your brainstorm all of the specific evidence you have listed. Look at the connections you have made - do you have enough, if not add to it.
After you have completed the above step look at whether or not any of the evidence and connections(reasoning) you have made with one set of evidence connects to another piece of evidence and reasoning. If so draw a lines between the pieces of evidence that connect.

Due:

Assignment

Annotate Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. You are focusing on the 3 rhetorical appeals: Logos, Pathos, Ethos.

Identify where and how (examples from the text) Edwards uses these appeals and then in your margin notes answer what effect these appeals have on the audience and why.

Due:

Assignment

Brainstorm ideas for your essay.. What types of appeals did Al Gore use.  What are the examples of these appeals. What were their effects. Why do they have that effect. Put down anything you can think of. Do not filter your thoughts!

Due:

Assignment

1.You have been given a prompt that asks you to write an essay arguing the difference between loneliness and being alone. Brainstorm ideas about what you would write. Include in the brainstorm: how you would organize your essay, what type of evidence you would use and your ideas(reasoning). You will not write this essay; you are only creating a brainstorming document. The brainstorming document can be a - web, outline or any other kind of graphic organizer. Whatever works best or you.
2. Once you brainstorm document is completed (and not before!) print out, read and annotate The Box Man by Barbara Ascher. Look at how Ascher organizes her essay, and the types of evidence she uses.
3. Be ready to discuss the techniques she uses and compare them to you own. What is similar? What is different?

I Believe Essay and Presentation:

Purpose: This assignment has three purposes: the first is to give me a sample of your writing, the second is so that your classmates and I understand you and your experiences a little more, and the third (when you present) is so that you will practice and be more comfortable speaking in front of the class.

Requirements:

1. Review the website thisibelieve.org to become familiar with the guidelines and
suggestions for the essay. Guidelines are also attached below.

2. You will be turning in a typed copy of your essay

3. Your grading will be based on how well you follow the guidelines (i.e. be personal, be specific and stay within length range)

4. All students will be “performing” their essay in front of the class – this is where you can get creative. You can read your essay, you can give us highlights, you can bring in images that reflect your belief, etc. I only ask that your performance helps us understand your belief in a clear way, and that the performance takes a minimum of 1 minute and a maximum of 3 minutes.

Due:

Assignment

Re-write one body paragraph from your summer essay. Make sure your topic sentence states a position. Weave in your quotes. Make sure you use personal examples as evidence. Focus on connecting your evidence and reasoning and connecting evidence, quotes and reasoning to the position taken in the topic sentence.   Try not to spend more than 45 minutes on this assignment, but also think about what your are writing before you write it.

Remember connect with your audience!

Assignment

Reagan Challenger speech homework.  Due Monday, 31 August 2015.

Use the Reagan Challenger speech to completely fill out the SOAPSTone organizer. Remember in your analysis, answer the question why and/or how the evidence you listed supports your conclusions.

Look at your organizer and on a separate piece of paper list the audience(s) you identified then identify which of the three rhetorical appeals (might be more than one) Reagan used to connect to his audience.  Supply and write out the evidence for your conclusions on what appeals are being used; pay special attention to Tone (Details, Diction, Syntax, Imagery, and Figurative language) Note: not all of the elements of tone are used, but some are. In writing explain the effect of the tone used on the audience – for instance why/how does the use of a particular word help Reagan make a connection to his audience?

Bring both papers to class on Monday to be turned in after discussion.

Note: I have added a pdf file which includes the definitions of SOAPSTone.

SOAPSTone organizer is attached below.
