Chapter 8 Make-Up Work Due Today (in order to take the Chapter 8 Make-Up Test) ***Date changed because Ch. 9 test is Friday 5/23***

Chapter 8 Study Guide & Review (in the textbook)
p. 461-464 #1-63 (skip #27)

(odd answers are in the back of the book. Correct those before coming in to turn in the assignment)

You must turn in the make-up work outside of class time. You must turn it in before school, at lunch, or after school and allow time to correct the even problems and for Mrs. Velasco to ask you questions to make sure you understand the content.

After you turn in the make-up work and convince Mrs. Velasco that you understand Chapter 8, then you can schedule your make-up test.

Remember, your score will be completely replaced by the new test score (assuming it's higher -- which it will be, because Mrs. Velasco won't let you take it unless she thinks it will) up to an 80%.

Chapter 9 Test: Quadratic Functions, Parabolas, and Solving Quadratic Equations

You need to know:
  • How to graph a quadratic function (a parabola)
  • Qualities/Parts of a Parabola (vertex, maximum/minimum, domain, range, opens upward/downward, vertex form, standard form, axis of symmetry, y-intercept, x-intercept(s))
  • How to solve a quadratic equation by graphing (graph the corresponding function and the x-intercepts are the solutions/roots to the equation)
  • How to solve a quadratic equation by completing the square
  • How to solve a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula
  • How to tell the number of roots to an equation using the discriminant
Attached is the study guide with the answer key attached to help you study and practice the skills you have learned in chapter 9.

Don't forget to bring the half-sheet of green paper you got in class with the formulas on it. And don't forget to add your own notes and examples in the blank areas to help you on the test.

You must do all the odd-numbered problems from each page in this PDF (and get most of them correct) in order to make-up the Chapter 7 Test. You must turn it in by Friday May 2nd outside of class (so in the morning, nutrition, lunch, or after school) so that you can correct it with Mrs. Velasco and get any questions answered that you still have.

Chapter 6 Make-Up Test Deadline.

Students who are eligible to take the chapter 6 make-up test are students who received a C or lower on the original test, meaning you scored 79% or lower.

1) In order to take the chapter 6 make-up test, you must first complete these problems from the textbook, neatly, showing all work and doing x-y graphs on graph paper.

Extra Practice: Pages 729-730
Sections 6-3 through 6-8 all odd problems.

2) You must turn in your problems to Mrs. Velasco and she must approve that you are ready to take the make-up test (she'll probably ask you questions to make sure you understand the concepts and make you correct problems if you have some wrong).

3) You must schedule a day/time to take the make-up test with Mrs. Velasco either in the morning, at lunch, or after school (after school only on Tuesdays and Fridays).

Reflection for End of Chapter 4: Due Tuesday 12/10/13

Write a 1-2 paragraph reflection about first semester so far. Here are the things I would like you to address in your reflection:

  1. How do you think this year in math is going so far in general and why?
  2. What concept(s) do you feel you understand the best from this year? Why?
  3. What types of things do you think are helping you learn the most this year? (eg. Doing the homework, correcting the homework in class, working in your teams, asking questions of other classmates, asking questions of Mrs. Velasco, studying at home, taking notes, a particular activity we did, the warm-ups, the find-the-error warm-ups, the group quiz, individual weekly quizzes, writing reflections, …)
  4. Is there anything you think would help you be more successful in Algebra 1 that we either currently don’t do or don’t do often enough?
