Description
CULVER CITY HIGH SCHOOL Algebra II (H) / Algebra II 2012-2013 Joan Yen [email protected] Culver City High School believes: 1. Each member of our school community plays an integral part in making student success a certainty. 2. That all students are provided the necessary resources and opportunities to become successful Collaborative Workers, Adaptable Problem Solvers, Critical Thinkers, Involved Citizens, Quality Producers and Self-Guided Achievers. 3. That all students are immersed in vigorous, standards-based curricula that promote higher level thinking skills. 4. That all students are capable of learning and as such, we educate that whole person providing students the necessary support to achieve their fullest potential. 5. That we value diversity and promote tolerance and espouse understanding and compassion. 6. That the aesthetic value of our campus is an important part of student achievement. “Learn to Achieve. Achieve to Learn…Tomorrow Starts Today.” Course Description: This course complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of Algebra I and Geometry. Students who master Algebra II will gain experience with algebraic solutions of problems in various content areas including: solution of systems of quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, the complex number system, arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. Standard: Course curriculum is aligned with California State Algebra II Standards. Class Rules and Expectations: 1. RESPECT: Behaving respectfully is THE MOST IMPORTANT expectation in my classroom. I expect that respect will be given not only between teacher and student, but between all students as well. 2. ATTENDANCE: As soon as the bell rings, students should be in their seats, prepared and ready to learn. “Prepared” means: have your pencils, textbook, notebook, supplies, and receptive mind ON when the bell rings. There will usually be a warm-up exercise for you to begin working on as soon as you enter the room. First and second tardies will receive a warning. Third and following tardies will warrant a school detention within 3 days. Failure to serve a detention within 3 days will result in a referral to the Assistant Principal. ATTENDANCE IS CRUCIAL FOR SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS! 3. ASSIGNMENTS: These must be neat, complete and submitted on time. Classwork and homework are assigned daily (even Friday). All assignments should have first and last names, the date, the homework number and the pages and problem numbers included at the top of each page! Keeping up with assignments is vital for success in this course. 4. MAKE-UP WORK: Each student is responsible for her/his make-up work. Absent students are to make up work within as many days as they missed. I recommend getting the phone number of a reliable classmate so you can immediately find out what you missed on the day(s) of your absence. You will be responsible to make an appointment with me for any missed quizzes and test immediately upon returning to school. 5. CLEANLINESS: Each student is responsible for leaving the classroom clean. Recommended Materials List: 1. Loose leaf notebook with dividers with the following headings: a. WARM UP/NOTES/CLASSWORK b. QUIZZES/EXAMS/STUDY SHEETS c. HOMEWORK d. OTHER 2. Graphing or Scientific Calculator (you may not need it for the first semester) 3. ¼ inch graph paper 4. Endless supply of notebook paper 5. Enough pencils and erasers to last the year (This is a math class; I will not accept INK except on projects—where it is required.) Grading Policy: Grades are based on the percentage of the total number of points earned from tests, quizzes, projects, assignments, class work, etc. The following scale will be used: Tests/Quizzes……………..60% A+: 100-99% A: 98.9-91.5% A-: 91.4-89.5% Participation and Alternative B+: 89.4-87.5% B: 87.4-81.5% B-: 81.4-79.5% Assessment*……………...30% C+: 79.4-77.5% C: 77.4-71.5% C-: 71.4-69.5% Final………………………10% D+: 69.4-67.5% D: 67.4-61.5% D-: 61.4-59.5% Anything below 60% will be considered a failing grade. *Participation: We at CCHS expect all our students to attend school regularly and arrive to all classes on time, ready to participate, learn and achieve. Participation consists of, but is not limited to, arriving to class ON TIME with all appropriate materials, active participation in class, and timely completion of CLASSWORK and HOMEWORK. Alternative Assessment: Consists of and is not limited to projects, pop quizzes, in-class assignments, and other tools of evaluation. …………………………Cut and Return (or by email) ………………………………………… I have reviewed the class syllabus for the course. I clearly understand it and will abide by it during the entire school year.
