Description
Course Description: This is a beginning level Modern Language class where students will be exposed to the language, culture, and customs of the vast Spanish-speaking world. Students will develop basic skills in all four facets of the target language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Beyond working with the text, students will have supplemental materials provided to enhance their learning experience. Students will demonstrate their knowledge through participation, assignments, testing, and projects. Course curriculum is aligned with California State Content Standards and/or National Standards.

Content Standards for Foreign Language:
1. Communication in language other than English.
2. Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.
3. Connect with other discipline and acquire information.

Materials Needed Everyday: Part of your grade is based upon being prepared for class. Each student must have a writing utensil, a pencil is recommended, but a pen of blue or black ink is acceptable; a notebook or binder with a clearly labeled specific section for Spanish 1; a folder or binder just for Spanish 1 handouts; a textbook; and your school issues passport (organizer). Book checks and notebook checks will be held on a regular basis. At times, note cards and coloring utensils (markers, colored pencils, etc.) will be needed.

Homework and Make-up Work/Tests: Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday with occasional Friday work as well. The amount of time needed to study, memorize vocabulary, and complete homework everyday will depend upon the individual student, plan on at the least 20 minutes each day. All homework is due at the beginning of the class period. Students working on homework after class has begun will receive a zero. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to find out what assignments and activities were missed. In addition to being posted in the classroom, students can find this information on the school’s website (http://cchs.ccusd.org). Any late assignments will receive 50% credit up to one day late. No incomplete work is accepted. The make-up dates for missed quizzes and tests will be posted in the daily agenda; all make-up tests will be after school or during lunch. If a student has an excused absence, they are allowed to make-up homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. If a student is truant (skipping class), the student will receive a zero for all homework, quizzes, tests, and projects.

Note: Tutoring after school is available on Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:15.

First Quarter People Project – Spanish 1 Srta. De Armond
This project is either a poster or PowerPoint presentation over a person, living or deceased, who is either Latino-American or from a Spanish speaking country. During our day with the COWs, you must find the following information:
Full name of your person; location and date of birth and death; specifics of their profession (if they are a musician, what kind of music did they compose/perform/record); minimum of 20 facts about their life in chronological order; a picture/drawing of what they looked like; and a visual representation of what they did (if they were a baseball player then a baseball will suffice, if they were a painter than a copy of one of their paintings will be adequate).
ALL INFORMATION IS TO BE SITED – KEEP TRACK OF WHICH WEBSITES YOU USE!!
Srta. De Armond will demonstrate how the projects are to be presented. All projects will be presented on 11/18. The breakdown of the points is as follows:
ü Full name, dates and locations of birth and death, specifics of their profession all in an “info box” on the poster. – 10 pts.
ü Minimum of 20 chronological events/accomplishments/facts from their life, all bulleted/numbered, grammar and spelling – 40 pts.
ü Visual of the person – 5 pts
ü Visual representation of what they did OR a work of their art/CD cover – 5 pts
ü Info sited – 20 pts
ü Websites listed on the front of the poster – 5 pts
ü Able to hear the speaker during the presentation 5
ü Organization, visual aesthetics of poster/PowerPoint – 10 pts TOTAL: 100 POINTS
EXTRA CREDIT: A maximum of 10 extra points for extra facts about their life.  5 more points for a visual interesting or heavy on the effort project.
NOTE: You must save any PowerPoint as 97-2000. If there are problems with how you saved your presentation you do NOT have an extra day to fix it!!! Srta. De Armond suggests you have your presentation prepared one day early to test on her computer! A late presentation will have an automatic drop in one letter (B goes to a C).
To site your information: at the end of your chronological list of events, write the FULL name of the website used (do not write www.biography.com, but write http://www.biography.com/articles/Celia-Cruz-40369). At the end of each fact, write the number from where the information came. YOU MUST USE YOUR OWN WORDS!!!!
