I think that the best way to describe myself could be summarize in the speech that I had to give during the 2006 graduation ceremony:
I have been thinking a lot about what to say to all of you in an important occasion like this. I always had the same thought, over and over again: I am proud of you.
But some people expect me to fill your minds with some advices, I am not going to do that, you have enough of that. Instead I am going to talk about one of my favorite subject: me.
What is education? As an educator I have had to find my own definition of education. What does education mean to me? And it could be close to this:
Education is not merely acquiring knowledge, gathering and correlating facts: it is to see the significance of life as a whole.
Long time ago when I began my career as an educator I thought of education as a tool to change the world. A way to finish poverty, misery, environmental irresponsibility, discrimination, war and nuclear weapons, prejudice and all the awful maladies that made this world the way it is. Now, twenty years later, looking at all of you I have the conviction that education works. I have known most of you, I have been close to you and as a result of that I do not have any doubt that you are going to change this world in a positive and beautiful way, as much as you can.
Some adults are telling you that now you are going to meet the real world and that it is scary out there. You have been part of the real world your whole life, and what you have in front of you is a place full of marvels and beautiful things. Enjoy it. It is going to be a challenge, but challenges are what make us grow.
I am going to finish with a wise and famous quote from Hollywood:
Good night and good luck
