INCOMING FRESHMAN INFORMATION

Welcome, this is an introduction for the incoming 2014 freshmen to the Culver City High School Cross Country (XC) Team. First let me thank you for your interest in a sport the gets very little publicity but probably has a greater impact on student athletes than any other sport offered by Culver City High School. Our sport is unique in that all athletes train together, run in the same meets, and in general become a family. There is no bench, everyone runs the same distance. It is probably the only coed sport at Culver City High School, thus developing social skills as well as athletic skills. The boys respect the girls to a higher degree than anywhere else because the girls can compete on the same level as the boys, and several of the girls are faster than some of the boys. Traditionally the XC Team has the highest GPA of all sports and the athletes tutor team mates when necessary.
Our schedule allows for up to 11 meet annually, 3 of which are league meets taking place on various Thursdays between September 1st and November 15th. the remaining 8 meets are invitationals, one held on a Wednesday (The South Bay Cup), with the rest being held on an occasional Friday night or on Saturdays. If we are successful in our league final competition (3rd place or better) we advance to CIF prelims at Mt Sac, then to CIF finals at Mt. Sac, then the Masters meet at Mt. Sac, and finally the State meet held at Woodward Park in Fresno
Our summer training program will begin this year on June 30th at 9am at Lindberg Park. In past years we have also held a second daily practice for those athletes who have a legitimate conflict with the morning practice, ie. summer classes or employment. We may discontinue this practice if there is a lack of interest. In order to participate in the XC summer program as well as the scheduled events during the year, all athletes must be cleared athletically, including an annual physical. Athletic packages are available at the Athletic Secretary's office and need to be turn in prior to the end of the current school year. Athletes attending the summer practices need to have GOOD running shoes and bring water. The practices will usually last about and hour and a half and will on occasion be held at our home course Kenneth Hahn Park. We will teach you children about hydration, diet, breathing, and yes, even how to tie their shoes.
I admit to being bias, but you will not find a better group of student athletes at Culver City High School than the family of the XC team.
Any questions can be directed to me with by email @ [email protected] or by cell phone (310) 339-9860.
