Today we finished discussing the Latin American Struggles for Democracy. Please note, the information on the South American map needs to be studied in context with the map itself. Also, if you click on some of the images, you will connect with videos on the internet pertaining to the information. 

Today I started off by discussing with students the 30th Anniversary of the protest at Tienanmen Square. Next, we finished yesterday's information on Africa. Next, we did a warm up pertaining to wealth inequality in Latin America. Lastly, we started discussing Latin American history in the 1950s through 1980s. We'll continue with this tomorrow. Please note, some of the images have links to videos on-line. 

I passed back the Unit XI Exam and went over the extra credit portion. If you'd like to look at the rest of the test, please come in tomorrow at lunch or make an appt. with me for Wednesday at brunch or Thursday at lunch. Today we finished up Democracy in S. Asia. Next, we did a warm up on Africa. Lastly, we started to discuss "Democracy Building in Africa". 

Today we started our last unit #12: End of Cold War and Democracy Struggles. We discussed the independence and partition of India as well as the situation with Pakistan and Bangladesh. I also gave out the Spring Final Exam Study Guide. 

Today students took the last Unit Exam of the Semester! If you were absent today, please be prepared to take the test tomorrow. We will start the last unit of the Spring Semester tomorrow! 

 

Today we discussed the U.S. involvement in Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Please remember to study for tomorrow's Unit Exam! 

Today we watched a Crash Course video on the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Next, we answered some questions from both perspectives regarding the land. Lastly, we transitioned to the Cold War policies of Nixon and a bit on Carter and Reagan. Please remember to study for your last unit exam (Thursday!). 

Today we checked and discussed yesterday's classwork which students were expected to finish at home (if necessary). Next, we did a warm up on the foundation of Israel. Next, we discussed the foundation of Israel and some of the conflicts experienced in the Middle East from the 1940s to the 1970s. Have a great three-day weekend! 

 

Today we finished discussing the end of the Vietnam War (please also view the video hyperlinked to the picture of the Huey helicopter on the last slide). Next, we did a "warm-up" on the "current" situation of Vietnam. We then discussed the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot coming to power in Cambodia and the genocide there. Lastly, students read the attached document and answered questions completely in their notebooks. I'll check the answers to these questions tomorrow and we'll discuss the answers at the beginning of class.

Today we did a warm-up on Ho Chi Minh. After sharing and discussing the answers, we started learning about SE Asia (French Indochina War, Eisenhower and JFK's policies towards Vietnam). We'll continue with this tomorrow. 

Today we finished up the film clips and questions from "Fidel". Next, we worked on the attached map of SE Asia. This will need to be studied for the upcoming exam.

Today we discussed the Cuban Missile Crisis and began watching clips from the film "Fidel". We'll continue with "Fidel" tomorrow. I also assigned for HW the attached reading, map, and questions about the Cuban Missile Crisis, which is due tomorrow.

Today we finished discussing Resistance to Communism. There are links embedded in some of the pictures to videos on the internet for you to check out as well. Please make sure you look at the political cartoon and answer the analysis questions as well.  

Today we finished up the questions from the Space Race reading that we started the previous Friday. Next, we discussed the Berlin Wall and will continue with Resistance to Communism via the Hungarian Uprising and Prague Spring tomorrow. 

Today I gave out the Unit XI Study Guide. Test TBD, but it will be at least one week away. Next, we continued with Brinkmanship and the Space Race. Lastly, student read the attached document and answered questions (in their notes in complete sentences) based on the reading as well as their textbook. 

Today we finished discussing the Korean War. Next, we did a warm-up pertaining to the Space Race. Lastly, we started discussing the Space Race and Brinkmanship. We'll continue this tomorrow.

Today we continued with the discussion of changes made to China under Mao by listening to "Voices from the Past", looking at the political cartoons and propaganda posters. 

After doing a warm-up on Mao, we continued discussing the changes Chairman Mao institutes after taking control of the People's Republic of China. We got through the "Voices from the Past" slide and will finish this up tomorrow. 

After doing a Warm-Up, we discussed the Chinese Civil War, part II. We'll continue this on Monday. 

Today we did the Berlin Airlift political cartoon in the attached "Berlin Airlift" PPT, and looked at the Berlin Airlift pics in the PPT. Next, I showed students pictures of the aftermath of WWII on Berlin, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. We did a warm-up on Mao Zedong as we are transitioning to the Chinese Civil War, Part II and we'll continue with this tomorrow.

Today I checked students' Cold War map. Next we did a warm-up about the Yalta Conference and discussed the answers. Lastly, we discussed the attached PPT "Super Powers Face Off!"

Today students had some time to review for their exam. Next, students took their exam and then worked on the attached Cold War Map, which is due Monday. Lastly, we started Unit XI: Cold War and took notes on the attached PPT. 

Today we finished up the unit with the end to World War II in the Pacific. Next, we reviewed for tomorrow (or Friday's) test. Periods 1, 5 on Thursday, Period 4 on Friday. 

Today we finished discussing the battles of the Pacific through 1943/44. We next did a Warm Up utilizing a WWII Europe map. After discussing answers, we got into the Allied Plan for Victory. We'll continue with this next Mon/Tues. (next week is block schedule). Please remember that your Unit X Exam is next Thurs./Fri. (block schedule). Enjoy your weekend! 

 

Today we discussed yesterday's reading on the Bataan Death March. Next, we did a warm-up on Gen. MacArthur. Lastly, we continued discussing the battles of the Pacific during WWII. Today we continued learning about Japan's Pacific Campaign. After working a little bit on the Asia map, students received a copy of the reading on the Bataan Death March and answered the questions in complete sentences in their notebooks. If you did not finish the reading and questions in class, please finish them tonight and I'll check them and we'll discuss the answers tomorrow. 

Today we finished yesterday's notes on the Battles in Soviet Union and W. Europe. We then did a warm-up about the battles in the Pacific and started the attached PPT. (only the title slide and 1st note slide). *** Unit Exam will be Thursday, April 25th if you're in period 1,5 and Friday, April 26th if you're in period 4 (Block Schedule next week). 

Today we did a brief warm-up pertaining to the areas Hitler had taken over by 1942 as well as which countries were part of the Allied side. Next, we discussed "Hitler's Lightning War- N. Africa and Eastern Europe". 

Today I passed out the Unit X (WWII and Holocaust) Study Guide as well as the April Textbook Stamp Sheet. We also started talking about WWII with the attached PPT. and also did a warm-up on Winston Churchill. Enjoy your weekend!

Today classes lasted 20 minutes. I chose to show two PPTs; the PPT on Dachau are from my trip there in 2017 and are my pics, the other PPT are pics of the course of events of the Holocaust (images from the Internet). PLEASE ENJOY YOUR SPRING BREAK!!!

Today we did a quick debrief of yesterday's Socratic Seminar. Next, we watched a video on the changes Jews experienced under the Nazis (please see link below and scroll down to the video on the website). Thirdly, we learned about and analyzed anti-Semitic laws passed by the Nazis. Lastly, we started, but only got through the first two slides or so, of the attached PPT on the Holocaust ("Nazi Genocide"). 

 

"The Children's Story" Socratic Seminar. You must have read the story 3-4 times, underlined/hi-lighted the story, annotated the story, and written 6 questions by today to participate. 

Today we held the Socratic Seminar on "The Children's Story". Please make sure you complete the Self-Assessment which is due tomorrow, along with your copy of the story and your questions that you wrote. 

Today we discussed Kristallnacht, looked at a few Disney anti-Nazi propaganda films, and we'll continue with the discussion of "Life Under Nazi Germany" on Tuesday. Please make sure you write six questions (2 at each level of the house on the cover page of your "Children's Story" packet) in preparation for Monday's Socratic Seminar. If you are not prepared for Monday's Socratic Seminar (read the story 3-4 times, hi-lighted/underlined key points for discussion, annotated the story, and write 6 questions for discussion) you cannot participate and your participation grade will be negatively impacted. 

Today we started class by doing our self-analysis on the Unit VIII Exam. Next, we started Unit X: World War II and the Holocaust. We started the PPT "Life in Nazi Germany" and we'll finish this tomorrow. For HW tonight, please read "The Children's Story" and annotate it in preparation for Monday's Socratic Seminar. When annotating, please keep in mind what we learned about Communism, Fascism, and Totalitarianism. 

Today we will have an open note quiz covering material from Unit IX. Please make sure you have all of your notes from this unit with you. 

Today students took an open-note quiz. Next, students continued to work on the Rape of Nanking documents that they started on yesterday. If you did not finish this in class today please do so for HW tonight as this is due tomorrow. 

Today we finished discussing the Rape of Nanking. We finished up notes from yesterday, looked at some images (graphic), read the attached four documents (1. NY Times, 2. Chang Forgotten, 3. John Rabe, 4. Ienaga Obit) and answered the questions on the attached "Rape of Nanking Documents Analysis" attachment. I also presented the attached PPT on the Nanking (Nanjing) Memorial and discussed the (fairly) recent apology by the Japanese Government to China. 

Today we discussed Japan's Drive for an Empire which included the Asia map. If you were absent today, please get the map from me. I also gave out the reading for the upcoming (Friday) Socratic Seminar. Please make sure you read the story and underline or hi-light things you'd like to discuss in the Seminar. 

 

Today we completed our discussion (and map work) for the events leading to the declaration of War by Britain and France. Please make sure you've taken the attached notes and colored the map according to what it says in the notes. Enjoy your weekend! 

 

Today we started working on the Europe Map for pre-WWII and WWII. We also started taking notes about the taking over of various parts of Europe by Hitler (the map goes along with this and in the PPT it tells the students how to color the map). We got through Czechoslovakia today. 

Today we started with finishing up the "Fourteen Characteristics of Fascism" and discussing them a little bit more in depth. We then did a warm-up on Mussolini and Hitler. Lastly, I gave out the attached Europe Map (I did not yet give out the Asia map) and the map directions. During the following days' class sessions we will be doing a bit of notes coupled with working on the map in class. If you were absent today, please get a copy of the map from me, not from the website. 

Today we continued with the Rise of Fascism. On some of the pictures there are hyperlinks to videos that we also watched during class. We also wrote down the "14 Characteristics of Fascism". 

Today we finished Friday's notes on "Post War Uncertainty". Next, students did a warm-up in which they defined "Great Depression" and "fascism" as well as took a look as a desperate German in the early 1930s for two different candidates running for the leadership of Germany. Next, we started (just barely) the attached PPT "Rise of Fascism". We'll continue with this discussion tomorrow.  

Today we started Unit IX: Rise of Dictators/ Between the Wars. We started by discussing last night's HW (due today). Next, we started discussing the social, scientific, and technological changes between the Wars. There are hyperlinks of music embedded in the PPT. I hope you'll enjoy!

Today students took their Unit VIII Exam (Nationalism and Revolutions). After they were done, students had time in class to work on the assignment "Depression in Germany". If students were unable to finish the reading and questions, they need to finish it tonight for HW.

Today we finished discussing the Revolution and Civil War of Mexico. We also watched a few review/informative videos. 

Today I checked with students to see how Friday went (I was absent). Students who finished Friday's classwork turned it in for credit. As long as students turn the work in to the stacker by tomorrow I'll count it as "on time". For students who want the notes for Friday's information, please check the class website for 02/22/2019. Yes, this material will be on Thursday's Unit Exam. Next, students completed a warm-up on Porfirio Diaz. Lastly, we started discussing the presidencies/dictatorships leading up to the Mexican Revolution. Of the attached PPT, we made it through slide 3 (Porfiriato Period) and we'll continue this tomorrow. 

I was absent on Friday. Students used their textbooks to complete the attached chart, answer questions, and complete the CLOZE paragraph. This needs to be completed and turned in to me for credit. I've also attached the PPT. that goes along with this information. 

If you were absent yesterday please see your counselor ASAP before school, after school, at lunch, brunch, or nutrition. Today we did a warm-up pertaining to Gandhi's methods of protest. We also watched a film clip pertaining to the Amritsar Massacre.

Today we started off with an interesting discussion based on three quotes (Sun Yixian, Confucius, & Mao Zedong). Next, we started discussing the Collapse of Imperial China (we got through slides 1-3) and we'll finish this on Tuesday. Lastly, I assigned the attached "Mao DBQ". Happy Valentine's Day to all of my lovely students! Today we finished up the notes from yesterday regarding Stalin's changes to the Soviet Union and the manipulation of the people through various forms of propaganda. We then did a "gallery walk" of Stalin-era propaganda posters and students filled out an analysis chart for each poster. If you were absent, please view the posters and fill out the chart and turn in to me when you return. Today we further discussed Leninism vs. Marxism. Next, I gave out the study guide for the Unit VIII Exam (exam date TBD, but not for at least 1.5 weeks). Lastly, we discussed how the U.S.S.R. becomes a totalitarian state under Stalin and all of his terror tactics. 

Today we finished discussing the changes Lenin made to the Soviet Union before his death, which ushered in the rule of Stalin. We also completed a chart comparing Leninism to Marxism and discussed the answers. 

Today we finished discussing the Russian Revolution, including the Russian Civil War (Red vs. White Army). Next, we discussed Vladimir Lenin in life and death (I elaborated on his death as I have seen him lying in Red Square). Lastly, we started discussing the changes Lenin made to the Soviet Union and we'll complete this tomorrow. 

Today we discussed the events leading up to the Russian Revolution. We also watched a video on the mysterious Rasputin (there are three videos hyperlinked into the PPT you can view if you click on the picture of Rasputin, the picture of him as a "ladies man", and the picture of Alexei Romanov. We watched one of the videos in class today). Although I have not yet given a study guide, I do recommend you review this PPT over the weekend. 

Today we officially started Unit VIII: Russian, Chinese, and Mexican Nationalist Revolutions! We are starting with the Russian Revolution, so today students paired up and did a pair-share on the attached chart of people involved in the Russian Revolution. The information they used to fill in the chart was based on the attached two information sheets. If you were absent today, please look at the information attached and fill out the attached sheet for yourself. Lastly, we started, but did not finish, the attached PPT on the Russian Revolution.

After showing students the results of their World War I exam, I had the "APUSH Chat" with students. This is a "tough love" chat I have every year with my Sophomores in which I explain the rigor and what is necessary to be successful in APUSH next year. THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. JUST BECAUSE A STUDENT ENJOYS HISTORY DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE READY FOR A COLLEGE-LEVEL COURSE.

Today we discussed the end to World War I. 

Today students turned in their HW on the Spanish Flu of 1918 and we had a brief discussion about it. Next, we did a warm-up pertaining to the Armenian Genocide, the topic for the day. After discussing the answers to the warm-up, we discussed the Armenian Genocide and ended with a video about it. Unfortunately we were unable to complete the video, although you can access it by clicking on the picture of the "Pashas" on the 7th slide. *** PLEASE NOTE, THERE ARE GRAPHIC IMAGES OF DECEASED PEOPLE IN THIS PPT. Today we discussed the "Great War Going Global". Next, students finished their World War I propaganda gallery walk. Lastly, I gave the attached reading and questions on the Spanish Flu of 1918. 

Today we discussed propaganda and then did a gallery walk of propaganda from WWI from various countries. Students had to fill out the chart as they looked at the various posters around the room.

Today I collected the Gallipoli HW and the Trench Letter which was due. Next, students did a warm-up. Lastly, we discussed how and why the United States joined the World War I effort. Lastly, we listened to an American propaganda song, "Over There". 

Today we started with a warm-up pertaining to the difficulties of fighting on the Eastern "Frozen" Front. Next, we discussed the Battle at Gallipoli as well as how the fighting in this war expands to Africa and Asia, including many colonial people. Lastly, I gave out a reading on the Gallipoli campaign. Please note, the Trench Letter as well as the reading and questions on the Gallipoli campaign are due Monday.

I also brought in a shovel similar to those used to dig WWI trenches as well as a pick axe actually from the WWI era. 

Today we finished discussing "Tactics and Battles". Next, students worked on the 1st page of the attached "Weapons of WWI" document (tanks). Tonight for HW, please complete the 2nd page on submarines. After discussing the tank, we started the attached PPT on "Weapons of WWI".
