Assignment

Dear Students,

I hope my message finds you well and safe at home. Your safety is our priority, and I understand this is an unprecedented time for all of us, but we will all do our best to address issues that may arise. Here are some instructions for working on your projects remotely. Please note that the following directions were given to you all on Friday, and that groups have had time to delegate jobs to every member. However, some of you were absent, so I will repeat/re-post them here.

1) Please communicate and respond to your group members' texts, email, Gchat, etc.

2) Use Google Docs. to compose, revise, and edit your MLA-formatted speeches (1 inch margins, double-spaced, Times New Roman). Use SOAPStone, ethos, logos, pathos, and other strategies you used during our Argumentative Essay unit to improve your chances of appealing to the Little 'Uns and Big 'Uns in the assembly. Make sure you provide a title and your group members' names at the end of your speech. In the heading, follow this format:

                                                                                                                                                                                                     Ralph 1

                                                                                             Your Own Title

3) On the day your project is due (which, as of now, is April 9), please give me 1 hard copy of your speech per group, and submit it to Turnitin.com via Canvas, so I can run the originality check on them. It's just like how you guys turned in your previous essays. The Canvas link is in the middle of my CCHS HW page after all of the LOTF Election videos.

4) As groups have already delegated individual jobs to members, please create your posters, buttons, shirts, jingles, etc. at home, so that we can put your videos together very quickly when we return from spring break. Please make sure that you do your work and not procrastinate. As I've said before, I am able to allot 1 whole week for you all to put your videos together, but this time frame may change, depending on how much longer schools are closed.

5) I am holding remote office hours from 11 am-1:00 pm every day this week via Google school email, should you have further questions. Please feel free to contact me with questions.

Again, please take care of yourselves and each other. We are all going through a difficult time, and it is best to wash your hands and practice kindness and social distancing while staying connected to each other through media and online apps. I shall miss you guys!  Attached below is a video of Grayson's mild descent into savagery.  He just turned 1 yesterday. I hope it cheers you up a bit! :)

Warm Regards,

Dr. Balatayo

Dear Everyone,

Thank so much for checking in and checking in on one another! I duly appreciate your concerted efforts of moving forward with your projects while we are all at home. Before you guys all enjoy your spring break, please note that depending how things go with this lockdown, I will contact you all through Canvas and Edlio on April 6 during your class period (3rd, 4th, or 5th) for further directions on how to move forward with our work. I may set up Zoom meetings online to check in with you guys in April, so please stay tuned for more directions. Just as a reminder, here is our regular bell and minimum day schedule.

Minimum Day bell schedule.jpgregular Day Bell Schedule.jpg

For the meantime, I hope you are continuing to stay safe and healthy during this great time of difficulty. Enjoy your time spent with your family, siblings, and pets (if you have any). Please practice moderate and healthy screen time, and try exploring new hobbies that minimize your exposure to others outside. Take care and stay well! I will miss you guys.

Warmly,

Dr. Balatayo

P.S. Grayson says "hi," and wants you to share your Netflix movie recommendations on CANVAS. :) Just hit reply on the comment space underneath this announcement.

Assignment

Hi Everyone,

I hope you're all doing very well and staying  safe given our current circumstances, and that you and your families are in good health! I miss you all very much, and I am very sad that we can't see each other in the classroom anymore, but we will move our lessons online so we can continue to learn and exercise our critical thinking skills together.  :) Please be patient with all of us teachers, as we are in the midst of making this tremendous task of moving everything online.

Reminder: We will be on block schedule for the rest of the school year while we are at home. Your parents were also notified of this change. Depending on your class period, I will check in with you online through Zoom on either Mondays (periods 1, 3, 5) or Tuesdays  (periods 2, 4, 6) starting next week, and then you can do the rest of the work I post for that week independently at home. I will post the Zoom links and class password for each ON CANVAS. So please go there.

Tomorrow, April 7 (Tuesday), I will hold a Zoom meeting for 4th period  students at 10:45 am, so I can "see" you guys, catch up/check in with each other, and address all of your questions/concerns. :)  On Wednesday, April 8, I will "meet" with period 3 students at 10:30 am and 5th period students at 12:00 pm. Instructions, links, and time schedules are posted on CANVAS. PLEASE GO TO CANVAS!

Regarding LOTF Projects

1) I am moving your speech deadlines to August 10 at 5:00 pm. Please follow the rules I posted earlier (please see previous announcement). That way, you can all find additional time to re-connect with each other and turn in your best work.

2) Based on your group responses before spring break, most of you are almost finished with your speeches already. I understand that some of you are having some issues contacting your group mates. Everyone is going through unique challenges because of the pandemic. Given the complexity of the current situation we are in, please do as much as you can and carry on with your speeches, so that you can meet your group's deadline at 5 pm on August 10. I will assist with trying to contact them, as well.

3) I decided to cancel the video and presentation part of the project altogether because it will pose a dire challenge for everyone to meet these requirements with a quarantine in place. Therefore, I am only grading your speech as a major assessment. Please note that since this task was assigned before the quarantine, it will go on your grade book. Honestly, I am very sad that I won't be able to see all of your creative and amazing projects. :( The election is one of my former students' favorite class activity, and I know you all would've produced a wonderful video. But unfortunately, we need to make do with the resources we have.

Regarding LOTF In-Class Essays

1) I've already graded your in-class essays and added them to Aeries. I have not yet posted them publicly because I am still waiting for those who have not yet taken the in-class essay to complete it. Just like the speech, the in-class essay will go in as a major assessment because it was assigned before the quarantine.

2) Once these folks have taken their essays and I've publicly posted your grades, I am open to discuss your essays and provide feedback via Zoom on Wednesdays during the designated English slot for intervention at 8:50-9:25 (see schedule) or by appointment. Just send me an email so we can set this up. :)

3) If you are one of the people who still needs to take your in-class essay, please wait for an email from me. I'll deliver instructions. :)

I understand that you will have more questions from me, so please write them down and save them for our scheduled Zoom meetings this week. Again, I am here to help you guys navigate the next 10 weeks as smoothly as we can, given our unique circumstances. As always, please contact me via email if you need any help, be it academic, socio-emotional, or if you just want to say "HI!" :) We are all in this together. <3

And as usual, here are few updates with Grayson: 1) Grayson just turned one before the quarantine, and we were lucky to have been able to celebrate his birthday with family and friends, and 2) He started walking shortly after his birthday! Attached is the video link below. I was lucky enough to catch him taking his first steps. Had it not been for the "shelter in place" law in place, we would've probably missed it.  :) These are a few things we are grateful for. I hope these cheer you guys up a bit.

Take Care and See you All Soon!

Assignment

Hi Everyone,

Good morning! I hope you are continuing to stay well and safe at home. I'd like to check in with you all regarding your progress with your LOTF projects. Please make sure you read my previous post regarding due dates and project instructions here on Canvas or on Edlio. Since only half of your classes per period subscribed on Edlio, I am also going to utilize Canvas to make announcements and discussion threads (in the near future).

Again, as of now, April 9 is our due date. I carved out some time for you to film and put your videos and presentations together. But things may change. I will reassess our agenda accordingly as we receive more information regarding school re-openings from state and county officials, and our own school administrators. Please stay flexible and adaptable problem solvers at this critical time. You got this! :)

Now, go to Canvas and post your reply. Only 1 response per group is needed, so please CHECK IN WITH YOUR ENTIRE GROUP FIRST! https://culver.instructure.com/courses/6476/discussion_topics/22117You may also access my Canvas page through the link I posted on my main HW page. Go to Announcements and select the most recent post. If you have not read my previous post (titled "Hi Everyone!"), please check that, too!
