We watched a video about the 2nd Battle of Wounded Knee (click on bottom left picture on last slide of PPT) and "Viva La Causa" about the United Farm Workers Union and their methods to fight for better conditions and equal rights. Today we continued listening to (some of) the music of the Civil Rights Movement, including "Change is Gonna Come", "Mississippi Goddam", and "We Shall Overcome". Students had t o analyze the lyrics and the music using the attached analysis questions. Next, we read about the history of racism in Culver City. This was an article recently written by a Culver City resident.

Today I passed out the Unit IX Study Guide (Politics and Civil Rights of the 1960s). Next, we finished discussing the "Triumphs and Challenges of the Civil Rights Movement". Today we discussed the Selma to Montgomery March and "Bloody Sunday". We also watched a video about this and the march which was finally completed to Montgomery. Next, we continued discussing the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968.

Today we learned more about the Civil Rights Movement, specifically the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and "Freedom Summer". We also watched a brief video about the murders of Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner, three men murdered during "Freedom Summer". Today we continued with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. We discussed the Freedom Riders as well as the integration of Ole Miss' with James Meredith. We also watched video about the Freedom Riders. We'll continue with this on Friday. Today we continued focusing on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s by learning about the court decisions which led up to the landmark Supreme Court decision "Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, KS". Besides the notes, we watched a clip about the Emmett Till murder (hyperlinked from the image of Emmett Till after his murder) as well as the attached two documents. Today we started class with a "Who is the Communist?" activity in which students looked at pictures of and information on six different people. As individuals, students had to decide for themselves who (if anyone) was communist. Students then discussed their answers in pairs or groups of three. Lastly, we had a whole-class discussion relating to this activity. Next, we began discussing how the Communist Scare of the late 1940s and early 1950s began to effect Americans. We'll finish this PPT tomorrow.

I also handed out the attached documents pertaining to "Who Caused the Cold War?". We will have a full class discussion about this next Friday.
