Summer Opportunities

The University of California is now requiring that students who wish to retake a D or F grade use only the following online programs:
  • Online lab sciences and VPA courses are not acceptable.
  • The NCAA has approved the following high school courses from BYU Independent Study for use in establishing the athletic initial-eligibility certification status of high school student-athletes applying to Division II schools only. Please be aware that the NCAA may have special requirements for a student who is seeking NCAA eligibility. BYU Independent Study strongly recommends that the student contact the NCAA Eligibility Center at 877-262-1492 or through their Web site at, as well as his or her member institution, before enrolling in any BYU Independent Study NCAA-approved high school courses. Also be aware that once enrolled, the NCAA may have additional requirements for completing the course.
New UC Policy:

Principal certification of online courses

Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, only UC-approved online courses can be used to satisfy the “a-g” subject requirements. In other words, the principal of a high school can no longer certify non-UC-approved online courses to fulfill a subject requirement. Online courses that were completed and certified by a principal prior to the 2013-14 year are acceptable to fulfill the “a-g” subject requirements.

Online schools

Online schools with “a-g” course approved prior to the 2013-14 update cycle will retain their UC course approval status through the 2013-14 academic year. Beyond the 2013-14 year, maintaining an "a-g" course list is dependent on the school demonstrating it operates according to the iNACOL Standards for Quality Online Programs [PDF] in addition to their existing, approved courses undergoing an assessment against the iNACOL Quality Standards for Online Courses. The assessment against the iNACOL course standards will require that the course either be submitted to CLRN for certification or that the online school conducts their own self-assessment. Online schools must notify UC by January 31, 2014 of the completed assessment process for any previously approved courses (i.e., courses approved before the 2013-14 update cycle when the former policy was in place).

On February 1, 2014, coinciding with the opening of the 2014-15 course list update cycle, UC will remove all non-CLRN-certified and non-self-assessed courses from an online school’s “a-g” course list and will remove the entire course list if the school did not submit to UC their program self-assessment against the iNACOL program standards. Courses receiving CLRN certification or that are self-assessed by the online school after February 1, 2014 must be resubmitted as a new course to UC during the 2014-15 course list update cycle to receive “a-g” approval for the 2014-15 year and beyond.

UC highly recommends that online schools begin the CLRN certification or self-assessment process early to prevent the removal and resubmission of their courses in 2014.
