English 11 (Period 1)

Course Description

English 11 at Culver City High School is rooted in American literature. In this course, students work with three core novels—The Crucible (first semester), The Great Gatsby (second semester), The Bluest Eye (second semester), and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (second semester)—and a selection of poetry, essays, short narratives, and historical documents pertaining to various literary movements within the continent. English 11 is a writing-intensive course and the student will write four major three-draft essays, as well as multiple inclass, timed essays. Students will receive weekly vocabulary and test preparation exercises, in addition to grammar notes and exercises everyday. Students will be prepared to successfully take the SAT, state standardized tests, and will be ready to move into English 12, Intercultural Literature, or other equivalent English 12 with confidence.
